East Kirkby Wolds Run

East Kirkby Aviation Centre Run – Saturday, August 16th.

The WWII Aircraft Museum is open to all and the World War II Avro Lancaster "Just Jane" will perform taxi runs during the afternoon.  The entrance fee for “Seniors” is usually £10.00.

Suggested Route:

I will start from my home in Hinckley, you will make your own way to start point at Six Hills.  Google Maps  Paul Bird may do a group run from somewhere in the Burton area.  My route takes me to the Carpenters Arms at Six Hill on the A46 and from there across country to East Kirkby, bypassing Melton Mowbray and most towns using smaller roads, bypasses, etc.

My brother John lives at Linton near Burton and he has accompanied me previously to East Kirkby by meeting up with me at the entrance to “The Carpenters Arms” at Six Hills.  We then travelled together using my route from there.  This arrangement worked well.  (The Carpenters Arms was previously known as the Durham Ox pub and maybe other names too.  It used to be a big bike meeting place years ago.)  It is now a rehabilitation centre.

If the weather is bad, I suggest that there will be very few people likely to do the run.  (Perhaps those interested can let me know and give me their contact details, e.g.  WhatsApp, Text, mobile number, etc so that I can message them if the run is on or off.)    (07429914951) for WhatsApp, text. My route includes a breakfast stop at Grantham.  (There is a big ASDA store with a Café and also a petrol station nearby.)

The route from Burton to East Kirkby would be approximately 90 miles depending on which way you got to Six Hills.  Approximate distances and times between stops are below.

Burton to Six Hills meeting point.                                30 miles.  (50 - 60 minutes.)  Ready to Leave Six Hills at 8.00 am prompt.

Six Hills to Grantham (Breakfast at Asda Café.)         21 miles.  (40 – 50 minutes) ( A short stop, ready to leave at 9.30 am. )

Grantham the East Kirkby                                           37 miles.  (60 - 70 minutes)

Times dependant on the average speed of the group.  I would expect to ride at 50 – 55 mph on suitable roads.  i.e. It is not a road race.

I will return from E. Kirkby to the Carpenters Arms.  You will make your own way home from there singly or with a group.  Eddy.

The first map below shows a suggested fast main road route starting from Allen House, Whetmore Road, Burton to The Carpenters Arms, Six Hills.  You may already know an alternative route going cross country.  The red arrow shows Six Hills.  The maps below show the Carpenters Arms Entrance.  If you are coming in from Burton on the Wolds you may travel in on the B676 Melton Road shown on the aerial photograph below.
